![]() Welcome to The Low Wood in Ulpha, Duddon ValleyUlpha is in the Duddon Valley, a little west of Lake Coniston. Scroll down for directions by road.Click this photo to see a panorama of Duddon Valley ![]() DirectionsThe nearest practical train station is Ulverston, which is about 1/2 hour from Lancaster on the East Coast line. Ulverston is about a 1/2 hour drive from us.Most people will come by road, and this is how to do it. Image produced from the Ordnance Survey Get-a-map service. Image reproduced with kind permission of Ordnance Survey and Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland. a) Exit the M6 at J36, and head north west along the A590. Watch out for a left exit after about 1 mile to stay on the A590 heading West, otherwise you'll end up in Kendal. b) Keep following the A590 for about 30 minutes through several roundabouts, until you get the turning for the A5092. It will be signposted Greenodd (and Broughton I think) and comes just after Haverthwaite and just as the road opens out into another section of dual carriageway. c) This road can be fun. It takes about another 15 minutes from here before you see signs for Broughton in Furness. Go past them and you'll soon be descending steeply to traffic lights (first set on this road) before a bridge. This is Duddon Bridge and you turn right just before the bridge onto a road signposted Ulpha and Seathwaite. d) This road is even more fun. If you are arriving in the dark, watch out after the cattle grid for the sheep who sleep on the road - they seem to prefer the middle of the road just over the brow of a hill, and sometimes there are two of them positioned to create an interesting chicane. You'll be driving along here for another 10 minutes. e) You won't miss Ulpha post office which comes shortl after crossing a small bridge. Its marked with a P on the map above. The Low Wood is 3/4 mile on from here. Arrow 1 is where you'll see the Ulpha sign. Arrow 2 is our place on the right, with a slate saying The Low Wood at the foot of a stone barn. | |
